NEWS DESK || August 11, 2025, Marked the 117th anniversary of the martyrdom of Khudiram Bose, a pioneering freedom fighter in India’s struggle for independence. On this day in 1908, Khudiram Bose was hanged by British rulers. The “Self-Sacrifice Day 2025” was celebrated throughout the day at Mahobani in West Midnapore district, West Bengal, the birthplace of Khudiram Bose, with various programs initiated by the West Bengal government and in collaboration with “Bengal Freedom Fighters’ Family Members.”
Notable individuals from West Bengal and family members of freedom fighters were invited. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Pandit, a distinguished social worker, nationally recognised sports person, Homeopathy physician, celebrated international poet and literary figure, renowned engineer and scientist, research scholar from Tripura, was the sole representative from the state at this event. On the stage, Dr. Pandit delivered a captivating speech about martyr Khudiram Bose and recited his own poem, enthralling the audience. The applause from the thousands of attendees was notable.
It’s worth mentioning that Dr. Mrinal Kanti Pandit’s father, the late Gaya Chand Pandit, was an honors graduate with distinction in commerce and a respected headmaster in the state, who was directly involved in India’s freedom struggle. He was an eyewitness to Khudiram Bose and had also seen prominent figures like Masterda Surya Sen, Pritilata Waddedar, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, poet Sukanta Bhattacharya, and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Late Gaya Chand Pandit originally hailed from Mymensingh district in undivided India (now Bangladesh). To evade British warrants, he moved to Tripura in 1942 during the princely era. He played a significant role in spreading education in Tripura by establishing several educational institutions, including presently recognised Kulai Higher secondary School and Halhali Higher secondary School.
Dr. Mrinal Kanti Pandit, the worthy successor of Gaya Chand Pandit, honored Tripura by attending the martyrdom day celebrations of Khudiram Bose at the invitation of the West Bengal government, marking a glorious chapter for the state.
